No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Gallant is an enigma to me.

Like, he clearly has results in multiple places but he's also run himself out of what, 3 jobs? Never having to do with on ice performance

I've never understood his exits. The first one especially.

Is he just another Babs type psychopath? I don't know. But I want to see some fire, and not in the form of the baby whale's weird jaw clanging. Fatty's lips don't move, the mouth just opens and closes and words come out. Like a baby cartoon shit character.

McClellan would be the most hilarious hire.

Dude has flamed out with some really good rosters behind him and is in the Babcock tree. Why the fuck is he still getting consideration for jobs?

Matthews +7 - not good enough but injured

Tavares +2 - not near good enough for $11m

Bertuzzi 0 - how much we gonna pay this guy?
Domi -2 - how much we gonna pay this guy?

Marner -4 - fucking yikes

None of this group should be getting paid significantly more than $1m:

Benoit -8
Krok -8
Robertson -11
Dewar -11
Kampf -12
Edmundson -12
Reaves -13
Holmberg -13
Gregor -20
Lilly -22
Brodie -57

This is all sorts of bad, but we were playing broken, shitty, scared hockey by design. Hard to make too many judgements against skill players when the entire transition plan was "toss the puck as hard as you can at the F1 in the neutral zone, he tips it into the zone, F2 & F3 go get it".

Their d were built for the style that they played. Their forwards certainly weren't. Some call that balance. I call that mismanagement. The d should accentuate the forwards, not hold them back.

It's like we fucked up with the Barrie addition and then just in general said fuck puck moving defenders, they're all bums.

The point about the team leaning into its identity is the right one.

We built a core that was pure offense, even our D was more offense than a dman, and yet we surrounded them with junk for the most part. Go big or go home, and so we go home every time because we keep relying on Kampfs, Gregors, and Baboons to round out the roster.

Ironically, we're probably primed now to be able to lean more into the offensive side than ever. Knies emerges, Robertson probably also a key player if not fucked around with, Cowan and Minty, Holmberg is a contributor, McMann is fast and strong. Just go in the direction that fucking fate is pointing you in.

Get rid of the coach who doesn't understand who to play, and the idiot GM who caters to him, and if he's actually on board with it all then get rid of Shanny too. Restructure management and round out the roster with more fast, skilled, hustle type players. That's all I see on the other playoff teams still playing. Why have we been doing it differently when we have more top end guys than any of them?

And on this point, it might make sense to walk from the UFAs. Domi sort of fits in if the price is right. Versatile, speedy, jack of all trades, and gritty, but dumb as fuck. A two year deal for $3M per again makes sense. Bertuzzi though just isn't worth the money. He's slow, stupid, and doesn't really do much. I like his heart and his battle, but he's really more of a third liner who wants first line money, and it just isn't worth it. Highly doubt his body holds up for much longer too.

Thing is, being a skilled team is not immediately synonymous with being a bunch of pussies, and "skill" is kind of a catch all term for a basket of abilities that lead to offensive generation. Domi & Bertuzzi are skilled hockey players despite some pretty glaring skill deficiencies (Tie can't shoot, & Bert has no hands when he's further than 3 feet from the net). Both are as greasy as the day is fucking long. Knies is obviously skilled, and got greasier by the game against the Bruins. Those are skilled forwards who can compliment star forwards just fine in most situations.

There's no room for unskilled players outside of niche roles. You have a pluggy 4C who wins 55% of his draws, PK like his hair is on fire and has a 94 gritensity rating in 'chel? Excellent, that's 9 minutes a night you can live with. A 6'6 #6-7 defender with multiple felony assaults but you wouldn't trust to pass the salt, nevermind an exit pass? Again, fine in 13 minutes a night. But you can't be playing no skill hockey players in key roles. Top 4-5 defenders all need to be able to skate the puck out of danger and not just blindly hammer it up the boards whenever they hear foot steps. Top 9 forwards all need to be able to at least look dangerous on a 2 on 1, handle the puck well enough to maintain offensive zone pressure, know how to get open around the net and what to do with it when it lands on their stick.

The sad thing is, anything we might've done differently may not have mattered anyway the way Swayman is going.

Well, except score in OT in game 7.

I can’t wait for my favourite part of the regular season…..when we play teams that suck, and we go full globetrotters on them for 60 minutes.

Love those nights when the boys can do as they please, completely dictate the game, completely shitcan someone, while flexing the full extent of their talents.

This rarely happened. No wonder Montana turned to True Crime
