Just when the leafs had started to creep back up into the top-5 elite group, they come up with a horrible week to push them right back down into the mushy middle. Two horrific performances against the bottom two teams in the league which they were lucky to come out with points, then getting solidly outplayed in a loss to the good capitals and then playing a bit better though still losing to the mediocre Pens.
The 5v5 numbers are starting to be a real concern.

And even as Mccabe's biggest fan around here, i think i might have been underrating him.
We were steadily creeping up near the top-10 in the 5v5 chart before McCabe's injury, but since he went out we've put up an hilarious 39.8xgf% 5v5 despite playing mostly bad teams. That ranks 30th.
And it hasn't been Phil Myers' fault either. He's actually been decent in a surprisingly big role, with the 3rd most 5v5 minutes and easily the best xgf%. OEL-Tanev is not nearly the shutdown pairing that McCabe-Tanev is.

The 5v5 offense is nowhere near good enough, but even the 5v5 defense isn't maybe as great as it looks, with goaltending maybe bailing them out. Then again, this could be a case where improved crease-clearing is making the goaltending look better than it actually is and not getting the credit it deserves from xga.
Both special teams seem to be on the right track, which is nice.
