OT: Soccer thread

How good is this Gilberto?

I was expecting bigger names. Not saying he won't be good, but this move doesn't excite me enough to go to a game.

Most people have never actually seen him play myself included.

They are going after 1 A level DP (Defoe, Gilardino etc) and 1 "B" level and Gilberto is that player. 14 goals in 24 games in the Brazilian top division, only 24 years old so he has some pedigree but we won't really know what we get until the season starts.

If you want a little more insight about the player Kristian Jack has a decent article up based on an interview he had yesterday, or sportnet should have an article up tomorrow morning.

here is the jack article: http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/Kristian_Jack/?id=438903

The moves that have been made this offseason have been positive IMO: Bringing Jackson in from FC Dallas, picking up picks for 2 players that weren't really in the plans (convey and Frei), and now this move.

I expect another move next week with the 2nd round of the re-entry draft taking place on the 18th. The big name if they come will be a January move I believe.

An established name like Defoe would be good for this team but I like the Gilberto signing more even though there won't be nearly as much buzz around that signing. That guy scored in Brazil and will score in the MLS and he is young enough to grow with this team and contribute for a few years.

Just about to post that... Doesn't mean it is done but Larson sure does seam to be saying it is done.

I have been told to expect an "extremely high" renewal rate from SSH so i would imagine that this would happen sometime before early January

Who do you guys think would be a better fit? Defoe or Gilardino?

I want this team to do good, i want my seasons to be worth it this year.

I'm not very familiar with Gilardino or Serie A in general but from what i have read Gilardino is more of a target man and similar type of player as Gilberto(if anyone knows more about this player please confirm or deny what i said). Just going from the Gilberto signing i think Defoe would be the better signing as he can play behind Gilberto.

Something like this is what i envision 4-4-2(really a 4-4-1-1):

------Bendik------
Bloom(upgraded) - Caldwell - Henry - Morgan
Jackson - Laba - Osorio(dero???) - Rey
Defoe
Gilberto

gilardino is most definitely an out and out target man.

he's pretty damn good at it, but he definitely needs good service to be effective.

Not sure how much DeRo has left at 35, could be a decent supporting option I guess. Justin Morrow seems a solid addition to the backline.

"You may not know Defoe has all ready signed for Toronto and will go in march as that when their season starts!"

and from the dailymail:"Toronto keen to finally unveil Defoe as new star striker ahead of MLS season kick-off"

Transfer window opens up soon so hopefully something gets done early.

With renewals due soon i expect they will want this done and announced by the 10th

I love Mexico...I've been places in mexico that most guero's don't go. But with that said, who bolts Vancouver to play in the Mexican league, to play in ****ing Queretaro of all places? There's some beautiful places in Mexico and a few of them have Mexican Liga teams...Queretero isn't one of those places. It's a 2nd tier Mexican city for **** sakes.

I never want to say it's a done deal but It's a done deal..... If this isn't a promo for the Defoe press conference than i really have no idea what it is.

They may be going a little overboard with this but when was the last time TFC's marketing department got to do something fun?
