The Fantastically Beautiful Joyously Superfun 22-23 Season Celebration Thread

He’s saying they clearly won the deal but their D was already strong — having solid players sit in the press box doesn’t help you win games

He’s like LOF in that his major hankering is for more goals scored
I get what he's saying. But a 3rd pairing d has very little influence on the game. This is where I struggle with some of the nerds.. They overvalue sheltered 3rd pair results/importance and undervalue guys who can play the tough minutes. All they did was add a guy who seemingly (maybe? If Dom is right) can play very difficult minutes successfully and effectively replace Muzzin leading to a very good shutdown pair with him and Brodie. They didn't have that guy who can play with Brodie and take care of the Kucherov's, Marchand's, etc. Now they do. Sandin on the 3rd pair was never gonna be a difference maker and he was never very successful moving up in the lineup to the degree that McCabe is.

Plus, injuries happen anyway. I bet Sandin still plays most of the playoffs if it's a long run.

Yeah, I cringe whenever I see a chart showing Sandin as a top 20 defender in the league. I'm glad that he's pumping the soft matchups, but we saw Dermott doing similar for a few years (not as well, but not far off) and well, yeah.

There's a huge jump in quality between making an impact in the top 4 and the bottom pair. Lilly was in that 58-60xgf range against weak competition and down in the 52-53% range against better competition as an all purpose top 4 guy. It's a world of difference.

Only part of this team I need to squint at to appreciate is the Kerf/Jarn combo of empty offense and general uselessness in the bottom six. Would love to some extra offensive pop there because those two are supposed to be the offensive cornerstones of that bottom six group and they ain't scaring no one.

TLDR: In a perfect world, Dubas pulls a Garland miracle out of his cock.

Yeah, the Engvall-Kerfoot-Jarkrok triumverate of playoff fuckery is my only roster concern left.

I think I wanna see how McCabe-Brodie looks. I know Keefe and Dubas were horny about Muzzin-Brodie for many years and actually did it during last years playoffs. You could hear Keefe finishing in his pants when he was discussing it. McCabe has survived the toughs in Chicago this year.. I think he can be a nice partner for Brodie to play the toughs against some very fucking good National Hockey League teams in the playoffs. Or at least, it's worth trying. Far more important to have that go-to pair established in the playoffs vs regular season.
McCabe-Brodie
Rielly-Lilly
Gio-Holl

This means we have the 2024 first rounder.. do we not???

I could see Sandin and the 2024 first bring in something hella interesting. But now we are getting a bit greedy methinks.

I would nut like ME for Garland and Schenn... OR Crouse
didn't we trade this for ROR?

Hate to say it but that particular young Swedish D sorta looks like a magnificent trade chip for a strong, young, cheap-ish middle 6 forward. If he hasn't asked for a trade yet, he probably will now. There's no space for him and we know he's not shy to voice his displeasure about it.
and y'all were giving me shit last season when I identified him as the obvious trade chip

I mean in a vacuum I preferred Ekholm but given the acquisition cost and cap hit, tough to be too upset. Caveat being, of course, that McCabe is actually as good a defender as we all hope.

Mccabe at $2m with term is a no brainer and well worth the trade by himself.

But yeah flipping a D for an F now would make mucho sense.

The Sandin for F version of Sandin move mentioned above would seem to make a bunch of sense if the right kid was out there.

I think the other side of this is that Brodie is probably damn near as good as Ekholm...so we kind of already have our Ekholm shut down guy. We wanted/needed a LHD that could run with him on that pairing. McCabe brings something to the pairing that Brodie doesn't as well with his general disregard for human life.

So, my take is just as CH has posted from Dom. We needed offense, but spent the last expendable capital to get a dman we don't really need. The D is better, but by that much with Sandin being the one bumped out? Very questionable unless McCabe is going to be some incredible presence back there. Offensively, doesn't bring much - we still have nobody (other than seemingly Lilly) who can score goals back there. Defensively, I dunno, you all seem to be saying the numbers show he did great with what he had to work with in Chicago. Definitely getting him in his prime years, signed for super cheap with the retention, is a nice thing to have. We're better, but I don't know if it's material, and if it is, it buries a really good asset in Sandin.

Having looked at it, I changed my mind and think there's definitely another move coming. They're not going to just waste Sandin as a #7. And Dubie has to know he needs more offensive threats up front. Kerf is a nifty player to have, love that speed, but with him expiring, Sandin pushed to the sidelines, and a big gaping hole on 2LW...there's one more domino that will fall.

Maybe it is Garland, but with Dubie he always seems to do something other than the obvious. Does Sandin, Kerf, and a prospect get you a pretty good young top 6 winger? Probably. Have to think Dubie is working on that as his final stroke.

Speaking of final strokes, losing in the first round after all this would probably kill most of us.
