TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Holl trade is obvious since Gio signed for cheap. And trading Muzz was always dumb.

Thankfully many GMs will give Boosh more money than we can afford, but we'll find a boosh-like guy to be the #7 for <$1m.

Hopefully Mo or Ras can switch over to the right side, though, so we actually use all 6 of our top-4 dmen every game.

Goalie carousel should be fun to watch. A whole lotta middling options gonna be moving around.

Would be nice if there was a young RD with Liljegren pedigree (i.e. Worse rep than Sandin) out there to flip Ras for in a straight swap. That's where Kyle's nerdiness could come in handy. But the guy has to exist too.

I think you just plan to let Ras run as the RHD next to Gio for the 1st half of season and give a chance to actually acclimate to the change. If he's struggling by late January, you take a look at the trade deadline market.

That should be our general outlook on a lot of these positional battles tbh. We have a bunch of young but pro aged guys who can potentially fill these gaps. Seney, Steeves, Douglas, Anderson, Abruzz, McMann, HoSang, Niemela, Kokkonen, etc, etc. We're developing a bad habit of giving our AHL guys a cup of coffee, deciding that they're no good and punting on them, only for them to look like functioning NHL options in their next city who gives them an extended chance, then picking off the reject pile of other organizations to try to fill our gaps on the NHL club with varying levels of success.

If you can pick up a "Nick Paul" every year at the deadline for a 4th, why go chasing them in the summer if you have in house options to assess for a few months?

Fwiw, that's the exact approach Tampa took last season. They started the year with Colton, raddysh, Katchouk, Foote, Barre-Boulet on their roster and over the course of the season decided that 3 of them needed to go but Colton & Foote were useful enough to keep.

Colton is an interesting one tbh

This is what he did last season

Okayish numbers as a 24 yr old, but got an extended chance and put up 11 points in his first 17 games before going cold AF leading up to the playoffs. Would we have even played him in the playoffs after 1 pt in 13 games or would we have started some veteran scrub instead?

Now dude is their 4th leading goal scorer in this playoffs after getting a real chance and experience last year.

This was his 26 yr old season, so just entering what are widely considered to be prime goaltending years.

Was a Liiga stud, and AHL stud in his first 60 games...and then sucked badly in 18/19 which was allegedly due to injury. 909 the following season isn't stellar, but it's not as bad as it appears either. Was tied for 18th in the league which isn't great, but also not terrible.

Its not uncommon to see these type of uneven development records in guys who go on to be good NHL goalies. Just looking at the ~15 goalies who put up .915 or better this season, about half of them: Smith, Ullmark, Stolarz, Forsberg, Jarry, Husso, Kuemper, Markstrom all had weirdo development curves.

Husso would be a way better spend of 3-4 million than Mrazek ever had a chance to be. Husso might actually be a 1A. Not an elite one, but a good one.

If you plan on signing a goalie to a 1 year "show me" deal as your solution at G, you're likely signing a poop goalie. Then again, Husso might be poop too.

Gonna have to take a gamble and give some term to a guy that your scouts believe in and hope for the best. At least one of their goalies next year will be a UFA signing. I suspect the other might be through trade; a Varly type (with retention).

Varlamov with retention and say... Eric Comrie might be a nice tandem. You have a one year exit plan on Varly and likely have to give Comrie term so your bets are hedged a bit. Of course it depends on the cost to acquire a retained Varly though.

Husso is a big risk on a multi year deal. Could be Andersen, but could also be Raycroft or Toskala.

Varly is the safest bet, and if you get a couple teams to retain you can spend like $1 mill on him. Pair that with Campbell and your likely set.

Bottom 6 (+2) caphits

Kampf 1.5 ------- Hagel 1.5 ------ Nichushkin 2.5
Engvall 1.25 ---- Colton 1.25 --- Lehkonen 1.15
Kase 1.25 -------- Perry 1.0 -------- Kubel 1.0
Clifford 1.0 ----- Bellemare 1.0 -- Helm 1.0
Bunting 0.9 ------ Maroon 0.9 ----- Newhook 0.9
Simmonds 0.9 -- Nash 0.75 ---- O'Connor 0.725
Spezza 0.75 ------ Paul 0.75 ------- Sturm 0.725
Blackwell 0.725 ------------------------- Cogliano 0.5

He’ll most likely get that type of offer from a few teams

Probably. In which case I’d be happy to see him go to another one of those teams.

If the Leafs are going to pay up for goaltending, I’d rather they just pay more and get someone who has an actual recent track record of success.
