TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Det/Ott have improved and Buff is on the upswing, I don’t know if they’ve improved enough to threaten us , probably not but if they have it won’t be a cakewalk to a playoff spot this year.
nah they still both suck. I mean they may be improved but none should be a real threat.

I get it. But we also got rid of Mrazek.
ultimately the success/failure of Dubie's offseason most likely comes down to how the goalies perform. and since they're controlled by voodoo dolls, who the hell knows.

but still, failing to try to improve the forwards would be a disappointment.

It's time the kids got a shot at improving the forwards, like the kids improved the defensemen last year, imo.

I like Sandin and Liljegren as prospects better than Holmberg and Steeves. Robertson needs to take a big step tho. No reason why he can't, but there is some uncertainty there.

which kids though?

the only one who would seem potentially ready for top-9 duty is Robertson in my view.

the rest are maybe fourth liners if things go well. we just have failed to build up the organizational depth. need producers on ELCs.

and keeping Kerf just seems... indefensible.

There's only one top-9 spot available.

and a couple 4th line spots.

4th line F is a less important role than 3rd pair D. Holmberg 23 Steeves 23 Abruzzese 23 Anderson 24 are older prospects than Sandin/Liljegren were and at the point where you want them fighting for bottom line NHl spots.

yeah you have Kerf in the top-9, which I object to.

I have:
Bunting-Matthews-Marner
XXXXX-molasses man-XXXXX
XXXXX-Kampf-Nylander

(assuming molasses man and Willie need to be separated). Kerf is one of those XXXXXs. Engvall presumably is another. which yeah, leaves one spot for Robertson.

but I gotta say, I'm not thrilled heading into the season with:
GOD LINE
Robertson-Molasses-Engvall
Kerf-Kampf-Willy

or any variation of that...

basically if we clear Kerf and reallocate his funds to try and take some flyers on top-9 forwards, I'd be happy calling it a day. can jettison Holl too.

but this hasn't been done yet and I think it's an area where we should aim to improve more than we have.

Yeah it's not great. If they weren't gonna add a legit secondary scorer to replace Kerf (which feels like it very likely won't happen now) I would have hoped they'd at least add a couple of solid middle sixers. And again.. They still may. A guy like Nino would be terrific to start.

Basically leave space for Robertson to demote Envall on the 4th line if he proves his worth. But the other slots are ideally filled by more certain talent.

Kerf scored 50pts last year with no PP time. If you want to credit that all to Tavares and Nylander you gotta explain how Kerf was a +19 while they were -8 and -9. Kerf is an excellent PK guy to boot, and fills in at C when needed. The hate is silly. If we move him he needs to be replaced.

At this point of the offseason last year they hadn't signed Kase or Ritchie yet (Day 3 and 4 signings). I imagine they were in on Strome but couldn't get to $3.5, and will probably sign 1 or 2 guys like Milano, Steel, Jarncrock, Larsson, ZAR.

There is still an opportunity to add a guy like Miller or Poolparty and make a significant upgrade to the team though. I mean moving out Holl and Kerfoot's salary for a Miller would be genius.

plenty can be done, yeah. the argument was whether it's logical to be disappointed thus far. And for the Murray move alone, yeah.. I think so. That's normal human emotion acting rationally to a high risk decision with no improvement elsewhere.

Yeah, the offseason has been shit so far. Its not a surprise people hate it. Even zeke hated the Murray deal for a couple days.

not sure why you guys mix up the lineup when talking about how we've changed from last year.

Last year

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kampf - Engvall
Kase - Blackwell - Spezza
(Simmonds/Clifford)

If you want to get a Mikheyev replacement that's fine, but then Robertson doesn't get a real chance. (Also note that Ritchie played in Mikheyev's spot for almost half the season).

Getting a guy who can actually play C and anchor that 4th line (which neither Spezza or Blackwell was able to do properly last year, and which might be tough for any of the kids to do well) but can also fill in as a middle 6 wing if Nick can't hack it would make more sense to me.

One of the best things we can do to improve this team is to jettison Kerfoot

JT-Willy-Kerfoot (401 minutes): 52.25 xG%
JT-Willy without Kerfoot (235 minutes): 60.7% xG

So we know he hurts our 2nd line

What about our 3rd line? Why not Kerfoot-Kampf-Pierre?

Kerfoot-Kampf-Pierre: 51.6% xG
Kampf-Pierre w/o Kerfoot: 59.0% xG

Just get fucking rid of him. He might not be a bad middle 6 forward, but he's a bad fit with what we've got here for him to play with. He knee capped every middle 6 line he was on last year.
