TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

My one critique with Dubas is exactly what Leafin' WANTS out of the next GM. I think he's trying too hard to balance the analytics bit with the "hockey guy" bit. Many of his deals and decisions have gone contrary to analytics and those end up being his worst mistakes.

He's always been pretty vocal about his assessments and what he uses to evaluate a player but you also wonder if there is some pressure coming from Shanny and others with these moves.

I think his biggest blind spot is goaltending, and not for lack of trying to fill the role but just assessing the position in general. Lots of swining with very few hits. Maybe they hit on McKay though

Dubas is the best. Like our roster, he just needs to work on the edges of his game and he'll be golden.

No more shitty scrubs inserted for a certain element who can't play a great overall game. Less reliance on bargain binners and more trust in your prospects. And really that's it. I can't even fault him on his goaltending since Freddy should've been able to win, and same with Jack (Mrazek was just a horrible signing, like Ritchie, but happens to be a goalie).

But there's no denying 115 points. The playoffs are still a different animal. Cheat more. They all do it.
It'll come if we keep improving the roster bit by bit, and the top players get angry enough to will themselves to victory.

And if it doesn't, it doesn't.

Is Keefe the type of coach that will let players cross the line? That's the question. Some won't. Too principled.

I like Dubas a lot. I think the organization they have built is fantastic. Even seeing guys like Grundstrom, Moore, Durzi, Marchment etc. take off around the league shows how good the Leafs scouting and development system is. Their prospect pool ranks very highly despite having no high picks.

He has certainly made mistakes though. And most of them seem to be when he ignores analytics (Barrie, Kerfoot, Lybushkin, Marchment, Simmonds, Foligno, Mimsy, McCann)

Its too bad because a few less mistakes and they could have had:

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
McCann-Tavares-Nylander
Marchment-Kadri-Engvall
Mikheyev-Kampf-Kase

Hopefully he is learning and developing too.

I don't blame him much for the Kadri one. He had to be dealt if we want to be real, it looked like a good trade at the time, and the real target was Brodie who he got for free anyway. It doesn't keep me up at night.

The McCann one though was so obvious and such a shame. Could've lost Holl and had Lilly in the lineup all year.

The Muzzin situation is very similar to the McCann/Holl situation last year, even if most of you aren't realizing it yet. We have an opportunity to deal from a place of strength on something we clearly have very good depth in (D), and reallocating to a place where we are top heavy and need more scoring out of the supporting cast (F).

That Kadri deal was garbage at the time. Poor asset management.

So tiresome reading the Dubas felating when he isn’t deserving. He was gifted this core group of players and has done fuck all. No goalie, no prospects have arrived in any meaningful way. The Dubas goggles on this board are unbelievable. I get loving anything and everything leafs but fuck that presser was the least accountability taken I’ve seen since the JFJ days.

The results have been no different than throwing a blindfolded dart and here I’m reading Dubas is great because he’s making analytically driven decisions.

Fuck that.

Finishing first in a 6 team league is no more impressive than finishing top-5 in a 30 team league.

This year the Leafs had the best pts% in team history, though there is a chance the 50-51 leafs might have had a better record when factoring out 3pt games.

Also, while losing in 7gms to the back to back champs hurts, the Leafs have also never won more than 2 playoffs rounds in their history.
christ, so I have literally been alive for the Leafs playoff runs where they win the most series in franchise history. that is... distressing.

So as I mentioned, I defriended Frenemy from FB because he wouldn’t stop with the harassment all day long. You’d think that would be a wake up call, that maybe one went too far and should maybe either give some time to cool off or apologize and just put a lid on it for awhile? No, not Frenemy. He just sends you a message the next day on IG instead:
send him a dick pic

Yeah, my opinion is that Dubas blinked at the first sign of adversity for his previously described team build and let the voices around him push him off course into gud pro land, which has led to depth actually not being our strength anymore.
this is a plausible theory

How awesome is it that we got more respect in the handshake line though?

Pretty awesome. Just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Or maybe that’s the fast food I ate for lunch building up to a fart?

Either way, who needs any tangible playoff success or progress when you get respect from the defending champs after they dusted you in the first round?
