TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

If Jack is the best option and you can get him for $4 or less than so be it. But no reason to fall in love with a decidedly average 30 year old who has never locked down a starters role. He’s basically in the same tier as Reimer and Bernier.

I think you can definitely trade Mrazek, it’s just what does it cost.

either way he can’t be back. And Jack is a UFA, so they have to add 2 goalies. The question is do you cheap out on Harry Sateri/Kallgren, or maybe go crazy and spent $4 mill on Holtby and Jones because goalies don’t matter (even though th average cup winner has too 10 goaltending) or do you actually try to build a good tandem and go after guys like Varly, Lehner, Saros, Jack, Husso etc.

IMO its obvious. You need good goaltending to win.
But is the cost to trade him going to be more than 4 years of dead space at ~1m per year? Will any team do the leafs a favor? The buyout backdoor option gives them leverage at least so they obviously won't get sucked into a Marleau type trade. I think a trade gets done too because having the backdoor buyout option will help with negotiations..

I'm not struggling with anything. You're struggling with reality and trying to twist and contort in any which way you can to paint our extra one goal allowed as a travesty between the pipes.

not a travesty, just never as good as what the other team seems to get.

and yeah, you're struggling with this big time. Fundamental level misunderstanding of the game.

You're struggling with the concept that any goalie will need more than 1 goal or 0 goals to win a Game 7.

And that we got .920 and .969 in the last two of those.

Our offense is actually never as good as the other teams' in those games, so I don't get the focus on trying to roll the dice on a position where the upgrade will be nothing more than another gamble. Instead of just holding on to the guy who has put us in a position to win, and finding guys to play behind the big 4 who can't produce squat in the last game of each season.

He was being a little vague, but I think 101 was hinting at a Sateri-Holtby tandem and I think I'm on board with that.

Looking at raw so % in a single game is pretty useless, but the reality with jack is that his first full year as a starter netted an average save percentage which was… right in line with his career average. And in the 5 chances he’s had to put a series away he’s allowed a handful of iffy goals, and been the second best goalie in every single one of those games.

he’s ok, but not a guy they shouldn’t be looking to improve on.

We should be looking to improve on everyone at every position if possible.

I don't think there's any clear and viable plan to improve on Jack the way there is to improve on Mrazek. It's change for the sake of change.

Shersty gave up two terrible goals in game 7 against TB. The first one to Stamkos was worse than any we've seen Freddy or Jack give up. Who do we want to get who would be more reliable than him in that situation?

Or at minimum, get the same guy for not 4+M

If we trade Mrazek, guarantee that he’s one of the top goalies in the league next year. I say keep him and own the mistake.

From a logic stand point this is akin to fuck it, Woll.

I was originally concerned that dumping Mrazek would lead to Mrazek 2.0., however, with Koskinen already fucking off to fuckville. I suspect the G market for bad goalies will be a buyers market.

The goal scoring in crucial games is a concern. This is why we do need a dirty power forward to get us some ugly goals. I am also convinced that you need guys who can cheat and not get caught with dirty plays.

Basically Corey Perry.. we need Perry.

You spelled Marchand wrong

I use to not like the dirty player argument, but I've certainly come around. I think Knies in the future can bring some of that. They do require a player though now that can help.
There's no getting around it, this team is not scoring goals in crucial games. Too many examples to ignore. And we can't just say "Oh well, next year..." at this point.

Sure, and if we get a fairy godmother to give him a pair of glass slippers, he could also turn into a princess.

Both of those possibilities are about equally likely.

Bottom line is that this dude is an unremarkable injury-prone journeyman backup who in the past six seasons, had one average-ish season a few years ago and has been mediocre to bad (or injured most of the season) every other year.

Wagering another $3.8M of our limited cap space that this pumpkin will spontaneously turn into a hot rod would be a really dumb, “throw good money after bad” type of bet.
