TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Moving Holl + Kerfoot, signing Strome, Murray at double retention and Kuemper actually all works under the cap, doesn't it?

They have $10 mill in cap space now. Add Kerfoot and Holl and its close to $16. They can do whatever.

Sandin is the only guy they have to resign, and he'll likley end up with a Lilly deal. You need 3-4 forwards for about $1 mill (including Robertson, Abruzesse, Anderson, Steeves etc.). So they'd have $12 ish mill for two goalies and a top 6 foward.

I did it on cap friendly yesterday with Murray at single retention and Bob at single retention. Had 1.3MM left over after moving holl and kerfoot and plugging the rest of the roster (signed strome)

I combined Murray's double retention and Strome (because you can't double retain on cap friendly). E.g. Strome is really $3.5 and Murray is $1.56.

They'll obviously sign some bargain bin UFA's too. All those kids and Simmonds/Lube are just salary placeholders to see what they can spend to fill the roster.

Going after Murray makes so much more sense if Kuemper's their primary target.

What I don’t get is, does Ottawa think it’s going to win something within the next two years? Or are they going for Gaudreau or someone like that? What in the world is their desperation to get out from under Murray all about that they’d give up a prime asset or two plus retain salary? If I’m them, I just happily ride him in net for another 1.5 years and trade him at the deadline for something.

But then again, Chicago is doing all kinds of unthinkable stuff, so why should Ottawa be any different?

It cost leafs a first rounder to dump Marleau. Why wouldn't Dubas get a first back as well?
The guy could easily end up on the LTIR and robidas island.

If we were taking on 100% of Murray’s cap hit, like the ‘Canes did with Marleau, then we’d be getting at least a 1st back.

The Leafs can’t really afford to do that, though.

It's happening. Better be some juicy shit + additional retention involved.
I just hope Murray is Plan B, not Plan A. As a cheap Plan B with mucho retention and only two years, well worth the risk.

If he's the guy we're pushing all our chips in on... don't love it.

Ottawa is a much improved team. They'll give other teams plenty of fits.

Murray isn't an NHL starter to answer your question.

We got absolutely hosed on the Marleau trade.

Everything about this Murray rumor is nauseating. Get a good goalie. None of this hoping he’ll be ok.

Here’s what we know. Murray has been shit. He’s been injured a lot. And he’s expensive.
can you provide a list of "good goalies" that you want us to try to acquire?

All this reviewing medical record diligence stuff is bullshit.

They’re waiting for Kuemper. If they get him, we’ll probably see some heavily retained trade for Murray. If Oilers grab Kuemper, the Leafs probably wind up with their second choice, who I think is still Jack, but at substantially less than his current ask. And then they get Murray.

So I think Murray is the plan b in both of those scenarios. But if Kuemper and Jack both go elsewhere, that may change things. Then maybe we start looking at situations like Price and Bob, and then maybe they go with a Kallgren as plan b? I dunno.

I just highly doubt they’re busy looking at MRIs all this time. They’re delaying for something.

I'm with LOF on this one though. don't spend dollars or term unless you have a Vasy. hell, even if you do (see, Price, few years ago) can turn out ugly...
But you still have no stud goalie in the system. Still.

Montreal drafts goalies almost every year. That's why they're good at development of them (won't talk about the forwards). I don't see the Leafs doing that. You draft 5-6 guys over a 4 year period to see who pans out. Like dating its simply a numbers game.

Ottawa up against the wall here - spending starter money they don't have on a goalie that they tried to waive last season.

Best I can tell, Ottawa either needs to retain 50% themselves PLUS find a third team willing to take assets and double retain AND STILL find a team willing to rehab Murray. And even retaining 50% might be too much dough for Ottawa - they might need to work a 4th team in there to do the initial retention.

A buy-out will cost $10mil spread over 4 years - so anything cheaper than that is worth it for Ottawa.
