He went in the fourth round. the coyotes first pick
Imagine if every teenager in our lifetimes had their future/career/life ruined by mistakes and immaturity? I'm not excusing his behavior, but they need to let it go. The family is set on ruining his career 4 years after his sad behavior. I'm not a big fan of cancel culture. Everyone has skeletons. If he hasn't learned from his mistakes, he'll mess up again and it will be dealt with.
I’d say there’s a big space between not getting drafted and life ruined. Sounds like this kid was a piece of work. He was threatened with that taking away his dream so he says he’s sorry. I wouldn’t want a team I supported to pick him.

I’d also say that his actions likely contributed to ruining that other kids life for a pretty key period of time. I guess if he can fix that then I’m willing to overlook it. Doesn’t appear he has though. You’re willing to give him a redo. The other kid doesn’t get a redo.

If you could go back and film/record every moment of every NHL player's teenage years, how many would be frowned on, blackballed, etc in today's society? I'm guesing a good chunk of them would be doing something besides playing hockey. Again, I'm not making excuses for his behavior, but I'm also 100% opposed to "cancel culture" and the long-lasting effects of "trial without a jury". People are acting like by drafting him, the Coyotes are promoting bullying. It's a bit ridiculous, in my opinion.

Seems like the onus is on him to make it up the the kid he bullied. Not on the victim of the bully’s family to just move on. It would appear they he’s made little to no effort to do so or that his effort has not been successful. He doesn’t seem like he’s remorseful beyond court ordered requirements.

I’m not supportive at all of the “cancel culture “ but actions have consequences. If you do terrible things at one point you need to change, and give people a reason to think you’ve changed and to forgive you and give you another chance. You don’t just deserve another chance without that.
This kid sent all the right letters to schools and teams etc. apparently only to those who could help him further his career. Maybe he should have put that effort into the kid whose middle school years he ruined. The way he did it seems insincere. If he was truly sorry it seems he would have been more focused on making amends and less on damage control to his reputation.

and I’ve got no issue with him getting picketed etc. but also no problem iwith people not thinking he deserves a second chance. I suppose it’s hard to know that without knowing the kid in person.

Ugh ... mis-read THAT about five times. I'd say the kid is fine at that position and Arizona should quit being defensive. Something like "look, the kid made mistakes and we're hoping he's matured and will continue to mature." Then, whatever. Like somebody said somewhere in the mix, there's a difference between ruining a guy's life because he screwed up as a teenager and getting picked a couple of rounds lower than he might have otherwise. This kid didn't get cancelled ... he got re-set into a lower pay scale. Big whoop.

Dreger tweeted that the OHL GMs will meet virtually tomorrow. It’s expected that the season will start on February 4, with training camp opening January 25. If that’s the case, Suzuki will probably spend more time in the Canes camp if they start as proposed. Our other OHL players, Rees and Murray, haven’t been signed to NHL contracts yet.

Wings re-sign Tyler Bertuzzi, 1 year, $3.5 million. That’s a nice raise from the $1.4 million he made in his last contract.

That Bertuzzi deal is an arbitration result. Bertuzzi asked for $4.25 million and the Wings number was $3.15 million.

Missed that. He was the first award.

There are 7 players left, no hearings until next week. Foegele and Victor Olofsson are on Wednesday, Ryan Strome on Thursday, Brendan Lemieux and Ryan Pulock on Friday, Christian Jaros on Saturday and MacKenzie Weegar on Sunday.

Avs sign dman Devon Toews to a 4 year/$16.4 million contract. The salary increases year over year are huge, reflecting teams hedging their bets on revenue for the next few years. His salaries are $2.35/$3.55/$4.6/$5.9.

That's great value for a really solid defenseman and I 100% understand the effort to shove the cash hit off until revenues are more likely to be "normal"

As for NYI ... they still have Leddy, Pelech and Hickey on that left side, but Toews had carved out a huge role for them and will be deeply missed. That $6 million they're paying Johnny Boychuk to get even older and more fragile over the next two years seems ... dumb. And they still have to get Ryan Pulock signed after they take care of Barzal, which is gonna eat up most of their cap. Meh ... Uncle Lou needs to hire a better cap guy.

Sens sign Alex Galchenyuk to a 1 year/$1.05 million contract. He’s coming off a 3 year/$14.7 million contract signed with the Habs in 2017. He had 8g/16a in 59 games between the Pens and Wild and was scoreless in 4 playoff games.

He went from a third overall, top shelf prospect to nothing but a mediocre, under achieving player everywhere he has been so far. There was some not so great baggage off the ice following him around to boot, so this could be his last stop to try and turn things around.

I think underachieving is relative. He has the 2nd most goals and points in his draft class, behind only Filip Forsberg in both. And he averages close to 50 points per 82 games. Underachieving relative to a $4.9 million AAV? Yep. Underachieving relative to his draft position? Maybe. He is outperforming all but a couple of players in that draft, although it was a defense-heavy 1st round. We’re paying more for Dzingel and Nino for less production than Galchenyuk, neither average 20 goals or close to 50 points.

Yeah ... it's more or less the entire top end of the forward crop from that draft that's underachieving, not just Galchenyuk. In retrospect, Terravainen (18), Tom Wilson (16) and Tomas Hertl (17) would have been much better value early on in that draft, but teams would have gotten laughed out of the building for taking them early. It was a nice draft for D ... especially at the 2nd level with Morgan Reilly, Hampus Lindholm, Jacob Trouba, Olli Maatta and Matt Dumba all rounding into very solid NHL players pretty quickly. It was a weird draft class, to be sure.

Slugs avoid arbitration with Victor Olofsson, signing him to a 2 year/$6.1 million contract.
