Rangers re-sign Tony DeAngelo, 2 years/$9.6 million.
Yeah ... that's too much for that stiff. If he didn't play the right side, he'd still be in the A where he probably belongs. It doesn't help that he's a toxic human being as well.

BTW, for context ... Pesce makes around $750,000 less than DeAngelo. Which is why Pesce is going to come up in trade speculation on the regular right up until that contract expires. He's the freaking bargain of the century.

And Pesce is locked in for 4 more years.

The Rangers were busy yesterday. They also re-signed Alexandar Georgiev for 2 years/$4.85 million. Actual salaries are $2.2 million and $2.65 million.

The Rangers apparently have a bit of a mess on their hands tied to all those rookie bonuses and the way those contracts are structured. Kakko, Fox, Lafreniere, etc all have some lofty bonuses tied to their entry level contracts that are causing some headaches in the not too distant future. Good problem to have with oodles of young talent but cap issues none the less.

They have more than $10 million in potential bonuses. Lafreniere and Shesterkin are at $2.85 million, Kakko at $2.65 million, Fox at $850k and Chytil, Gauthier and Lindgren combined for $862.5k. They also have nearly $13 million in buyouts this year and a little over $4 million next year according to CapFriendly. And with all that, they still have more than $10 million available, although the bonuses don’t count unless they’re paid.

Yeah ... everybody in NY media seems to assume it's going to be Kenny Albert, but I'm fairly sure that would entail a pay cut for him seeing as how he would have to stop or dramatically reduce his NFL and NBA work. Forslund is not only better than Albert, he's almost certainly cheaper.

Yep, he left the Edmonton bubble early so he could get back to his NFL gig. He doesn’t do much NBA anymore, only filling in on the Knicks when Mike Breen isn’t available. He also has a full time hockey gig, as the radio voice of the Rangers. Doc gave up his Devils duties years ago, but guys like Olczyk and Jones have local gigs too.

There is one other name to throw in the mix; Mike Tirico. He’s done a few games for NBC and he’s already under contract. I think the idea when he came over was that he’d call some Sunday and Thursday NFL games, but NBC only has a couple of the Thursday games and Al Michaels doesn’t show any sign of slowing down. He has Notre Dame football in the fall, but that’s only for their home games and shouldn’t affect his availability for the NHL. Does he do the studio show for Sunday night football?

Ultimately, Forslund is the only guy who would be following the Emrick model...100% dedicated to the NHL on NBC. That is, of course, unless he picks up the Tampa gig too.

From my perspective, the only way John Forslund doesn't fall perfectly into Doc's role is if he decides that he still wants an almost full time gig for a team. I think the NBC #1 NHL role is his to say no to, as it would allow John to still keep his family here. He probably would be able to be home more just doing the NBC thing full time. I don't know his personal situation and desire, but I would be pretty surprised if he isn't offered Doc's position and, assuming he is, if he doesn't take it.

The only downside to Forslund taking the NBC job is that he might only have 1 “home” game, at least until the playoffs.

I tend to agree CMal, you would think no one would turn down the #1 National job if it was offered, the gig is pretty much a softball down the middle of the plate for Forslund the way I see it, Forslund is better than Albert and frankly I just do not see how another home team gig for Forslund makes sense over the NBC lead dog job if it was offered to him unless it came down to a family/personal decision. If Johnny Sideburns does not get offered the NBC gig, I would put higher odds on him waiting for the Seattle job with Francis over the Tampa job when it comes to the lead play by play man with a single team.

The Seattle Kraken play by play job was already given to Everett Fitzhugh, so that job is not available to Johnny Forslund.

I would think beyond that open Tampa job that there must be some other bigger market team out there that would think about 'retiring' their long time Play by Play guy for Forslund if Forslund is still interested in such a job.

Thanks, I missed that Seattle hire.

I thought Fitzhugh was hired for an unspecified job, not necessarily as the TV play by play guy. I could be wrong though.

The Rangers have to be ready to put Sam Rosen out to pasture by now. He’s 73 years old. I listened to a playoff game on the radio, i don’t think it was a Rangers game. He’s lost a few feet off his fastball. He works with Joe Micheletti as the analyst and he’s no spring chicken either, he’s 65. Of course MSG employs guys into their dotage; Walt Frazier is still doing Knicks analysis with Mike Breen and Clyde is 75.

Never liked Tirico and he was harassing women at ESPN. Not a fan of Emrick either.
And they say we never agree on anything. I feel you on both counts. Tirico is good at what he does but he oozes "creep" vibes and Emrick's voice always bothered me.

Now I will admit that some of the media stories don't specifically say that Fitzhugh was designated the Kraken's play by play guy, using the more generic term 'broadcaster'. Fitzhugh's LinkedIn itself say just Broadcaster as his current job title. However I think the intent has always been to have Everett do the play by play for Seattle. The only question is whether or not they hire a separate radio guy or not.

The Kraken have hired Gary Roberts as a sports science and performance consultant. He “will ensure the Kraken training center and team infrastructure have the proper equipment and systems in place to enable Kraken players to perform to their highest potential." I guess that means no one on one time with Stamkos or McDavid anymore?

They also hired Nate Brookreson as head strength and conditioning coach. He’s currently an Assistant AD/Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports at NC State.

To the shock of no one, Kevin McCarthy is joining Laviolette’s staff in Washington.
